Ankle Boot Support Brace Easy on Off
While hiking or orienteering, you constantly face a myriad of potential hazards that might cause a potential ankle injury, even if you have strong ankles, the right kind of boots, and trekking poles.
Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries in hiking. They are typically caused when you roll your ankle excessively inward, stretching or tearing the ligament on the outside of the ankle.
Once your ankle ligaments have been damaged or stretched, you'll be more susceptible to repeat injuries, chronic instability, or arthritic problems later in life.
Some hiking enthusiasts avoid wearing an ankle brace because they worry it might weaken their ankles, and while there's no clinical research to support this theory, there has been research done that indicates traditional fabric lace-up ankle braces can negatively impact your ankle range of motion and strength. Since maintaining your natural range of motion is a necessary component to keep your ankle strong, protect your ankles by choosing braces that don't restrict your natural ankle movement.
Hinged ankle braces, like the Ultra Zoom and Ultra High-5, make sure the only movements you're restricted from doing are those that might cause an injury. If you wear a mid-top hiking boot, we recommend the Ultra High-5 ankle brace because its taller profile makes for an easy application in the mid-top boot. If trail training and racing is your thing, or you like to wear a low-top hiking shoe, we recommend the Ultra Zoom ankle brace because its low profile form-fitting design works well with the low-top shoe. Both braces are on your ankle in seconds, protects for hours, and lasts for years.

Mid-Top Hiking Boots
Wearing a mid-top hiking boot with an ankle brace is going to require the brace comfortably fit in the boot and easily secure to the lower leg. The Ultra High-5 ankle brace becomes an extension of the hiking boot where the strap easily secures to the lower leg above the laces.

Low-Top Hiking or Trail Shoes
Wearing a low-top hiking, training, or racing trail shoe is going to require a lower profile ankle brace that will fit inside a tight-fitting shoe. The Ultra Zoom has a flexible shell that uses body heat to form-fit to the ankle to easily fit inside the shoe.

"I purchased the Ultra Zoom to help firm up my ankle for hiking. I have several 50ks, and even a 100-miler planned next year, all on trails so I needed something that did not change the way I run because it's too uncomfortable. What I like about your brace is it's not a rigid plastic like the other braces I have tried. I like the way it forms to my ankle and fits in my high top type hiking shoes and the support is great. Best of all I hardly know the brace is on which helps for my long hikes."

"I love to hike but my ankles are shot. Years of playing sports and being active have taken its toll. Hiking has been my only form of exercise but it's now causing too much ankle pain to continue. I found your website and ordered the Ultra high-5. I like the way the bottom fits under my insole so its really comfortable. I can hike longer without pain and I don't get as sore afterwards. Great product."

I have total garbage ankles. I injured them badly in my late teens, then again and again afterwards, and now it's way too easy to roll them if I'm on uneven ground. I tried high-top boots, stability poles, and ankle wraps, and nothing really helped.
I saw these and thought they were pricey, I figured I'd give them a shot. When I first tried them on, I thought they were kind of uncomfortable, and bulged out my shoes so badly it looked like I had clown feet. I almost returned them! But I checked out the instructions and saw that they needed a break-in period to mold to your ankles. It really wasn't long at all before they were very comfortable and I could pretty easily forget they were there.
I picked a moderate level hike up Stinson Mountain, and geared up. Almost immediately, I noted the High-5's as a big improvement over the ankle wraps I'd tried before in how much mobility I still had on the way up. I really was able to forget they were there. These braces kept my ankles from rolling, and though I could probably still injure myself with a bad fall or something, I felt a LOT safer, and a ton more confident. I made it down the mountain without any pain at all, and now I'm a total convert.
These are more expensive than wraps, but I really believe they're worth every penny, and I'm very glad I gave them a try! You just need to make sure you take the time to BREAK THEM IN, or you're going to end up hating them. Wear them around a few days and let them mold to you. Once they do, they're like comfortable armor for your ankles.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Ankle Braces for Hiking
Will the Ultra High-5 Fit in My Hiking Boots?
If you wear a mid-top hiking boot then yes, the Ultra High-5 will fit. However, boots like a military or work boot are too tall which makes it very difficult to fit any ankle brace comfortably inside. Stick with a mid-top boot designed for hiking and you should be fine. For low-top hiking shoes the Ultra Zoom ankle brace fits best.
Do I Use My Shoe Size to Determine Brace Size?
No. You may have a very large shoe size, but a small ankle. To determine your ankle brace size, measure the circumference of your ankle per the size chart. Using shoe size is not an accurate way to determine the appropriate brace size.
Does Wearing an Ankle Brace for Hiking Create a Dependency or Weaken My Ankle?
In theory, the only braces that could potentially weaken your ankle are those that limit the joint's natural range of motion (such as wraparound or fabric lace-up ankle brace). Lace-up braces bind up your joints and restrict your ankles' natural movements necessary to keep the muscles strong. That's why we always recommend hikers wear a protective ankle brace with a hinge.
